Episode XXI: The Big Sugar Controversy! (and new Archer Farms Ice Cream flavors)

Hello friends! We hope you had a great week! We’re back with Episode 21 – or XXI if you’re Roman.

This episode we share about an activity we participated in – an Historic Fun Run about the Great Chicago Fire hosted by Fleet Feet Chicago. We learned a lot about the fire, and Chicago while burning a lot of Activity Points – win/win!

The Route

Formerly the O’Leary Barn

St. Patrick’s Church – survived the fire and is the oldest church in Chicago.
The site of the Haymarket Affair – a workers’ uprising.
Crossing the river.
We added some miles after the fun-run.

Don’t worry, Buddy got some Activity Points this week, too.

Would you believe we actually went to WEIGH IN this week? We share how it went.

The Freestyle Weekly topic was “Be Sugar Savvy”. It was very controversial in our meeting room – was that the case in your meeting room as well? We dig a little deeper and try and figure out why – bear in mind we are not doctors, we’re just trying to understand the topic. Weigh in with your own opinions.

In Recipe Corner, we share a “scandalous” recipe for Pasta Puttanesca. We don’t have the rights to reprint it, but we share the details on our podcast, so have a listen. It’s honestly just “throw a bunch of salty stuff in a pan and add cooked spaghetti”, but slightly more refined. You can also find it in the “Yes, Italian” cookbook from Weight Watchers, or by clicking this link directly to the recipe on the Weight Watchers website.

And did you know that Archer Farms (of Target Fame) has it’s own low-sugar, high-protein ice cream now? Well, we tried 4 of the flavors and we break them down for you. (Spoiler: they’re GOOD)

We also found two new flavors of Quest Protein Bars that are great. Peanut Butter Brownie Smash and Maple Waffle Protein Bar.
Check them out!

Finally: We announce the winner of our first raffle! The winner of the Weight Watchers tote, Weight Watchers colored pencils and Weight Watchers note book is….. Samantha Martin of Kentucky. Congratulations!! Your prize will be on it’s way shortly!

And we have a new raffle starting NOW! Go and enter our raffle for a Weight Watcher “Food Chopper” by visiting our Facebook Page and following the instructions there on the “Giveaways” tab. Good luck!

Episode 20: Giveaway Time!

Hello Friends!

This week we bring you up to date on our return to Chicago and the fun we had at the #WWGood event in Lincoln Park. We had a blast! If the event is coming to your town, be sure to go!

Way to go WW for providing fresh fruits and vegetables to families in need.
We’re out here doing GOOD!
Drink your water, people!

Fun with props!
Side note: We could easily eat a bunch of grapes this large.
Getting our “Move” on.
Enjoying some inspirational speakers.

Then we focus on how Greg did with his dad visiting. Maybe you’ll recognize the decisions he made, or the struggle of “how do I stay on plan without being a party-pooper”. Can you?

No weigh in this week so we did another Double Freestyle talk. We cover “Boost your Body Image” and what that means to each of us, as well as “Bring on the BBQ” – always a good reminder on how to manage those food-focused celebrations.

But let’s be honest – it’s all about the giveaway so go enter!! You can enter at our Facebook page by clicking this linkhttp://gvwy.io/q8sa244 It’s live until Wednesday, July 18.

Episode 19: Dim Sum Race and then Some

We’re still tucked tightly into our way-back machine, getting caught up on our very busy June events.

This episode, we’ll tell you all about the very cute “Dim Sum and then Some 5K” we ran in our neighborhood, and how it landed Tab in the ER.

The Start/Finish line was literally on our street!
There was a good turnout.]
I mean – that’s a pretty big range of pace right there.
AKA Tab’s people.
Here’s Tab crossing the finish line!
We got Dim Sum!
Buddy appreciated that it’s the year of the dog!
An attempt at a soreness recovery drink – a Golden (turmeric) Latte.
Everything’s fine.

We also talk about how 5K races (or longer!) can be very motivational and inspirational as well as very affirming. We really encourage folks to try it out if they’re even a little bit curious.

There was also a trip to Toronto to talk about – we ventured north for the weekend to attend Greg’s mom’s memorial event, and so that leads to a discussion about family events where you don’t control the food, and now we navigated this potentially emotional event,. How did we manage?

In Freestyle talk, we doubled up, visiting the “Plan your Summer” topic and “Zero Point Foods”. Do we have plans for the summer? Do we eat anything *other* than zero point foods? Tune in!

There’s lots of very real talk in this episode, so we hope you’re ready.

And finally, in our Sneak Peek – Greg’s dad visited – did they eat anything *other* than ice cream while he was here? Are you planning to register for any of the races at runDisney’s Marathon Weekend at Walt Disney World in January? Oh, and we’re hosting a bunch of GIVEAWAYS for the next few weeks! Go check it out – sneak peek – the first one is LIVE NOW!!  Click this link or go to our Facebook page and use the “Giveaway” tab on the left side of the page.

Episode 18: The Disney Special

If you’re a lover of all things Walt Disney World, then this episode is for you! We spent some time exploring the parks (and beyond) at Walt Disney World, and we share that experience in this episode.

We include our recommendations for point-friendly snacks and meals, to help you realize that a trip to the theme parks doesn’t necessarily have to put the kibosh on your healthy food choices.

The episode wraps up with some Top 5 lists, including Top 5 Resorts, Snacks, Rides, Characters and Extras – and as always, we’d love your feedback on those. What are your favorites?

And speaking of Disney – did you know that Tab can now plan your Disney vacation? Email her at t.wells (@) keytotheworldtravel.com or reach out to her at her Facebook page or website for a free, no-obligation quote!

Episode 17: We’re Back!

Hello friends! We are finally back with Episode 17 where we start to fill you in on what’s been up with us for the last month. We hop in the WayBack Machine to fill in the blanks.

We’re on our way!

This episode focuses on family visit in Florida, did we manage to stay on track while we were traveling?

We also talk about the weekly Freestyle topic – “be here now” all about embracing mindfulness. Greg’s all in. Tab’s not sure.

There’s a Recipe Recap, based on a delightful Salmon Panzanella salad we had when visiting family, but we don’t have the recipe. We’ll update as soon as we can.

And finally – for our Sneak Peek – we’re going to DISNEYWORLD. Our next episode will be all about our favorite Disney things, including how we manage it while on plan with Weight Watchers.

And speaking of Disney – did you know that Tab can now plan your Disney vacation? Reach out to her at her Facebook page or website for a free, no-obligation quote!

Episode 16: The Simply Filling Experiment

Hey folks! Are you ready to hear about Greg & Tab’s experience at the Night Nation Run in Chicago? Well, buckle up and get ready to laugh along, because they have opinions about it! So many opinions.

Fun?

After that, slide on over to the Weigh In, and hear how Greg and Tab are faring on Lifetime. Some might say that Lifetime is harder than the weight loss journey. We won’t say that. We don’t want to scare you. Just listen.

We check in with Tab; who, now that she’s Lifetime, apparently feels it necessary to fix what isn’t broken… She’s spending some time experimenting with Weight Watcher’s Simply Filling program to see if that is a good fit. Hear how it’s been going so far. (hint: pretty good)

There’s also a wee Recipe Corner easter egg in there if you want to listen for it. The recipe for Sautéed Beef and Tomatoes can be found on Weight Watcher’s site, and it’s really, really yummy.

Finally, our Sneak Peek has us looking forward to our show (tonight! at iO’s Jason Chin Harold Cabaret) and our trip to Florida to visit family and a few well-deserved days at Walt Disney World. Be sure to be following us on the sosh-meeds to get all the lowdown on how we’re staying on plan while we travel.

Episode 14: Ramping up for Spring

Hi friends!

In this week’s intro we talk about how we’re introducing different kinds of activities into our workouts (and lives), and spend a minute acknowledging that some of you are interested in talking about healthy fats, and what that even means for our journey on Weight Watchers. We’re going to dig into that topic a little more in coming episodes.

We also have a very drama-filled weigh in for you. Tab is on week 5 of Maintenance, how’s that going? And even more dramatic – how was Greg’s first weigh in as a Lifetime Member?

The Weigh In also leads us into our Freestyle talk, where the topic is Scale Standoff – how to handle a plateau. We’ve talked about this topic a lot lately, and this week we reinforce the tools you can use.

Greg’s at the Farmer’s Market

Greg took a trip to our local Farmer’s Market for the new segment “Farmer’s Market Finds”, and came home with a bunch of ramps. What are they? What do they taste like? How do you use them? We’ll let you know!

You guys, Tab is super excited about this week’s recipe corner. You can find the recipe for Run Fast Eat Slow’s Wild Salmon Sweet Potato Cakes by clicking on this link.  (Sorry for the external link, but since we don’t have permission from the publisher to reprint it, we’d rather be safe than sorry!)

What we did differently: We replaced the almond flour with Quest Multipurpose Baking Mix, and instead of frying the cakes in oil, we placed them on a pan in our air fryer and cooked on 4 minutes per side.

They were so delicious, we ate them up before snapping a picture. What’s wrong with us?

Finally, our sneak peek of next week’s episode – Tab’s running the Cinco de Miler 5 mile race, we make Fish Tacos with Mango Salsa, we share our BBQ report, and… drumroll… will Tab stick the landing and make Lifetime?

Episode 13: Flamin’ Hot BBQ Tips!

We’re super pleased to bring you Episode 13!

We give a shout-out to some listeners (hi, Spain!) and share how we did with our Race Against Extinction 5K race goals.

We beat Extinction!

In the Weigh In, we check in with Greg to see how he’s doing on Lifetime, and find out how Tab’s Maintenance is going. Only a few more weeks!

Our Freestyle discussion centers around how hard it can be to be kind to yourself, and how we can start going about that.

Guess what? It’s just about warm enough here in Chicago to BBQ, and so we’ve busted out our Flamin’ Hot BBQ Tips! Little bits of advice we have to keep your gatherings on the Weight Watchers-friendly tip. We’re just getting started on this topic. We want your feedback so we can all plan for success this summer and make it the best season yet!

In Recipe Corner, we get you started on your healthy BBQ season by encouraging you to adapt this Martha Stewart New England Grilled Seafood Bake by trimming back the butter and/or using Brummel and Brown instead. It’s one of our favorites because it’s so easy, but it tastes so decadent. We’ve used salmon and cod in this packet, and they’re both equally good. Try your own favorite fish!

Look at these fancy beauties!

Finally, our sneak peek: it’s farmer’s market season and ramp season, so we’re going to figure out what ramps are, and how to cook them! We’ll have that next episode!

Episode 12: Four Recipe Corners make a Recipe Room

We are back! Thanks for your patience.

Also, thanks for participating in our Twitter poll; “Is it Worth It?” We got a pretty resounding response to our 45sp meal question. (PS: You can find us on Twitter by clicking this link, or looking up @watchinweight).

How is Greg maintaining on Lifetime and how is Tab handling Maintenance on her way to Lifetime, you ask? Find out in this week’s Weigh In segment.

The Freestyle for the week suggests you just “Eat what you Want!”, and we talk about what that means for us, and how we manage it by keeping it as part of our lifestyle.

And finally, the moment you’ve been waiting for. We pull away the plastic protective covering on this renovation – we have a Recipe Room! Four recipes we’ve been tried out – references to original recipes sources are included. No affiliate links here for the books, just good old fashioned word of mouth cause we’re fans.

Artichokes from Love & Lemons
  • 4 regular or 8 baby artichokes
  • 1 lemon
  • 3 tsp olive oil
  • sea salt
  • freshly ground pepper
  • chili pepper flakes

Preheat oven to 375

Clean and prep artichokes by trimming off leaves and cutting back the stem
Cut in half lengthwise and carve out choke.
Place cleaned artichokes in bowl of water with juice of lemon plus the quarters of the same lemon until ready to use.
If baking in a dish, brush dish with one teaspoon of olive oil.
Cover artichokes with remaining two teaspoons of olive oil and season to taste with salt, pepper and chili flakes.
Toss to coat completely.
Place artichokes in baking dish, cut side down. Place quartered lemon in baking dish as well. Cover dish with aluminum foil, bake for 45 minutes for full sized artichokes, or 25 – 30 minutes for baby artichokes.
*air fryer attempt – wrap 2 artichokes and 2 lemon wedges in aluminum foil. Poke holes in the foil and cook 8 minutes on high, flip and then 5 minutes on high on the other side.*
